What is Education for Sustainability?
Education for Sustainability aims to find ways in which all individuals can become well informed and active citizens so they are able to balance the four principles of sustainable development. It is about equipping people with the skills, values, attitudes and confidence to make positive choices in a rapidly changing world.
Education for Sustainability is not a new subject or a cross-cutting theme, it is a whole school (or community) ethos based on values such as participation and commitment to equality. It is about how something is learnt or experienced rather than what is taught.
Education for Sustainability enables pupils to develop the knowledge, skills, understanding and values to participate in decisions about the way we do things individually and collectively, both locally and globally, that will improve the quality of life now without damaging the planet for the future.
