The Buzz, Walk Ride GM

What do they do?

The Buzz is a walking and bike bus innovation project supporting schools across Manchester and Trafford to make the school journey more active, social and sustainable. We help schools and their communities set up Walking Buses and Bike Buses, where children travel to school together along safe, planned routes.

We provide free, practical support from planning through to launch, working with each school to understand their community, travel behaviours and local neighbourhood. This includes surveying parents and pupils, planning and testing routes, completing route risk assessments, providing promotional materials and training parent and staff volunteers to lead the buses.

We also help more children learn to cycle and have the opportunity to access bikes and the equipment they need, helping to remove some of the barriers that can prevent active travel from being a realistic option for families. Alongside this, we provide each school with a bespoke route booklet and connect them with further training and a wider network of schools.

Routes run every week and are designed to be owned and led by the school community, so they can continue long-term without The Buzz. Our aim is to make active travel a normal and achievable part of the school journey, reduce traffic around school gates and help children arrive active, social, calm and ready to learn.

The Buzz is funded by Active Travel England and delivered in partnership with TfGM, Manchester City Council and Trafford Council.
